On Feb 22nd, Mike Hughes was confirmed deceased following a crash-landing and he was 65 years old. A video on social media shows a rocket being fired into the sky before plummeting to the ground nearby. BBC reported that Saturday’s launch was reportedly filmed as part of Homemade Astronauts, a new TV series about amateur rocket makers to be aired on the US Science Channel. The project had to be carried out on a tight budget.
According to Space.com, Mad Mike was trying to reach an altitude of 5,000ft (1,525m) while riding his steam-powered rocket. Later, the Science Channel said Hughes had died pursuing his dream.

Hughes was scheduled to launch his homemade rocket for a new Science Channel series called “Homemade Astronauts,” according to the Discovery Channel website.

In 2002, Mad Mike set a Guinness world record with a 103-foot (31 m) jump in a Lincoln Town Car stretch limo. He built his first crewed rocket on January 30, 2014, and flew 1,374 feet (419 m) in just over one minute over Winkelman, Arizona but he collapsed after landing and he took three days to recover.
Previously, he had completed a successful launch in March 2018, which sent him 1,800 feet in the air. In an Interview with CBS News, he said “The Flat Earth thing is like everything else to me,” and added “I just want people to question everything. Question what your congressman is doing, your city council. Question what happened during the Civil War. What happened during 9/11.”
On August 10, 2019, he planned to again launch himself in a rocket but due to mechanical troubles postponed the launch and this launch was in part sponsored by the casual dating app “hud.”
Apart from this he also appeared in the music video for the Death Valley Girls’ song “One Less Thing (Before I Die)”. In 2019, he did a documentary “Rocketman – Mad Mike’s Mission to Prove the Flat-Earth”.
