Carlos Yulo was born on February 16, 2000, and from Manila, Philippines. He is a Filipino artistic gymnast who has won bronze and gold at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. Furthermore, he became the first Filipino and the first male Southeast Asian gymnast to win in the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships with his bronze medal finish for the floor exercise finals in the 2018 edition, and the first-ever gold medal for the Philippines in the 2019 edition.
This performance also secured him qualification to compete for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Yulo, who won gold at the world championship early in the year to seal a place in the 2020 Olympics in Japan, scored 84.900 in the six routines to easily beat Vietnam’s Dinh Phuong Thanh (82.350) for first place.
Fans came in droves, most of them lining up as early as 10 a.m. to watch the newest Filipino sports hero at home. They didn’t go home disappointed. “I just want to thank God and thank them,” Yulo said after his victory, expressing his gratitude to the crowd that chanted for him after every completed rotation.
“Here, the crowd gives more attention to the Philippine team. In Germany, it’s like nobody knows me, so I’m just doing my thing,” he said. Yulo was not the only Filipino gymnast to earn the crowd’s adoration.
Reyland Capellan, who won gold in the floor exercises in the 2017 SEA Games, also drew praise, as did Justine de Leon and Jan Gwynn Timbang.
Carlos Yulo Career
He started his career at the age of 7 and was part of the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines program. Later, he was free trained by the Philippine Sports Commission the Rizal Memorial Complex with Ricardo Ortero as his coach.
Since 2008, he started competing at tournaments like Palarong Pambansa where its an annual multi-sport event involving student-athletes from 17 regions of the Philippines. In 2011, Palarong Pambansa won four gold medals, while he claimed another gold medal finish for the 2011 Philippine National Games.
In 2016, he went to Tokyo and trained under Japanese coach Munehiro Kugimiya and in 2017 Carlos competed at the 14th Junior Asian Championships in Bangkok, Thailand and won gold in the parallel bars after qualifying in fourth place.
In 2018, he made debut in the Gymnastics World Cup and at the 2018 Asian Games, he scored highest in the qualification phase but didn’t win the medal after finishing 7th in the final. At the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Yulo claimed gold in the floor exercise finals. A historic feat as the first-ever Filipino winning gold at a world gymnastics championship.
