Ariana Pekary

Ariana Pekary is a former MSNBC producer, who publicly quit her job and posted an open letter that decried cable news in general as a “cancer” that “risks human lives.”

She worked on “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell,” shared the letter on her site Monday, accusing the network of letting ratings dictate content. She wrote, “This cancer risks human lives, even in the middle of a pandemic.”

Later, she added “The longer I was at MSNBC, the more I saw such choices — it’s practically baked into the editorial process – and those decisions affect news content every day,” she continued. “Likewise, it’s taboo to discuss how the rating scheme distorts content, or it’s simply taken for granted because everyone in the commercial broadcast news industry is doing the same thing.”

On Monday night, her letter went viral after she posted it publicly. Conservative media, including Ben Shapiro’s Daily Wire, jumped on the story as evidence of the “far-left” bias often attributed to MSNBC by Republicans. Pekary, however, said in her letter that all of the cable news was partially to blame for the state of division in the country.

Career

She joined MNBC seven years ago with “Up Late with Alec Baldwin,” and on July 24th she resigned. In MNBC she became a booker and segment producer for another six years.

Later, she produced an Emmy-nominated feature on public housing and tried to “highlight stories often found beneath the fold that help explain those above the fold,” and she won a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for Radio Sigma Delta Chi for a radio documentary and a Radio Television Digital News Association award for a radio documentary.

Furthermore, Ariana received an Emmy nomination for a segment she produced for The Last Word, according to her website. After her resignation, she said Trump’s leadership became the primary focus of the coronavirus coverage instead of “science itself.”

In the letter, Ariana said that a year and a half ago, a friend advised her to quit MSNBC, after she brought up concerns she had. The friend said, “You just quit. It’s that simple.” She received praise from some former colleagues on Twitter.

Sasha Walek wrote on Twitter “Wish I was brave enough to write something like this when I left cable news. @arianapekary is spot on. While many smart & well-intentioned people work in news, nuanced discourse & reporting has been sacrificed for ratings. Sowing division & hyperpartisanship is highly profitable.”

Former MSBNC host Krystal Ball also re-tweeted Pekary’s letter, quoting her sentence about cable news being a “cancer.”

Talking about her career, she joined NPR as Assitant and served there from 2002 to 2004. Then, she joined KQED as Freelance Producer and served untill 2006, then she was a Freelance producer at KALW radio.

As an Producer, Ariana served at XM Satelliete Radio, and KGO-810AM.
