Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal, a new true crime series on Netflix, explores a fatal boating accident that claimed the life of 19-year-old Mallory Beach, as well as a murderous crime spree that left Paul and Maggie Murdaugh, shot and killed, teenager Stephen Smith, and Murdaugh family housekeeper Gloria Satterfield dead inexplicably.
Anthony Cook, who was dating Mallory when she passed away and was present during the boating tragedy, was a character introduced by Netflix during the series.
In a case against Paul’s father, Richard Alex Murdaugh, who was found guilty in March 2023 of killing his wife and son, his testimony was crucial.

On January 1, 2019, Mallory and Anthony, who features in Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal on Netflix, began dating. Despite the terrible end of their romantic engagement, the two had been great friends since they were young.
On February 23, 2019, they joined Anthony’s cousin Connor Cook and his girlfriend Miley Altman during an oyster roast. They were joined by Paul Murdaugh and Morgan Doughty, who was then his girlfriend.
Paul Murdaugh brought them all out on his family’s boat to get to the event. Even though the gang was underage, there was a lot of drinking that night. They gathered on board in the wee hours of February 24 in order to go back home. Unfortunately, not all of them would survive.
Paul Murdaugh was charged with three felonies for boating under the influence following the incident in relation to the collision. According to Greenville News, he had entered a not-guilty plea to each allegation and was awaiting trial at the time of his passing. But, following his passing, all accusations were dropped.
According to WSAV, Anthony filed a separate civil complaint in 2021 that included Alex Murdaugh, the convenience shop where Paul Murdaugh bought the booze, and the cashier who sold it.
In this lawsuit, Anthony said that Alex Murdaugh was aware of his son’s unlawful alcohol purchases and that he was already intoxicated when the boy boarded the boat on February 23, 2019.
After the accident and the accompanying killings, he has kept a relatively low profile. Anthony experiences uncomfortable symptoms that are consistent with a PTSD diagnosis, according to ABC News. Anthony is thought to be working as an electrical lineman in the Southern United States, despite the fact that he supposedly went through a party phase after the accident.
