In his speech before the results were revealed Saturday, Del Duca acknowledged he would have a lot of work to do if he were elected the leader of the party.
“Our road ahead as Liberals will not be easy, because we have a ton of work to do,” he said. Later, he added “We need to raise millions of dollars. We need to find qualified candidates who reflect Ontario’s incredible diversity. And most importantly, we need to forge a platform of compelling ideas that once again inspires people, lets them know they can trust us to govern – because they trust us to be on their side and to fight for them.”
Steven Del Duca has been an active Liberal since he was 15 years old. In his 30 years career, he worked as a local campaign volunteer, a riding president, a campus club president, a political staffer, a campaign manager, an Executive Council Member, a candidate, an MPP, and a Cabinet Minister.
From 2012 to 2018, he was the Liberal Ontario MPP for Vaughan. Later, Steven also served in Cabinet as Minister of Transportation, and as Minister of Economic Development and Growth. In September 2012, he was first elected to the Ontario Legislature and he defeated the Progressive Conservative candidate Tony Genco.
However, he re-elected in the 2014 provincial election defeating PC candidate Peter Meffe and then was appointed to cabinet by Premier Kathleen Wynne as the Minister of Transportation. Later, he lost to Candidate Michael Tibollo on June 7, 2018, after ran for the Ontario Liberal Party in the Ontario provincial election.
Last year, he announced that he would enter the 2020 Ontario Liberal Party leadership election and fast forward to 2020, he won the election with 58.8% of the ballot vote, having received 1,258 delegate votes.
