Marty Smith was born on November 26, 1956, and from Algodones Dunes, California. He was an American former professional motocross racer and won three AMA National Motocross championships, all aboard Hondas, and was runner-up twice. Marty and his wife were both killed in a dune buggy rollover accident at the Imperial Sand Dunes in Southern California on April 27th, 2020.
He was 63 years old during his time of death and according to the report he and his wife rolled down a hill after a Buggy flipped in California and Marty was not wearing any safety harness and his wife Nancy wore only a lap belt. However, the emergency squad arrived at the scene but Marty was pronounced dead and his wife Nancy was airlifted but later she also passed away at the Hospital.
This Horrific incident was witnessed by his friend at the accident spot and wrote on Facebook “It’s with the heaviest, grieving heart that I have to tell you Marty and Nancy Smith were killed yesterday in a rollover accident in his dune buggy at the imperial dunes,” Rampage wrote. “My wife, Tammi and I were in the buggy and were unhurt,” later he added “We spent at least an hour trying to save their lives before first responders arrived. Marty took his last breath while I was holding his head, keeping his airway clear. Marty was my best friend and I tried everything in me to save him while Tammi tried to save Nancy.”
Marty was a popular figure in the racing industry and know for his long hair and Southern California surfer looks, he made his first appearance in 1974 and won the inaugural AMA 125cc National Motocross Championship and next year also won the titled in 1976. Later, in the year Marty won another 125cc U.S. Grand Prix of Motocross.
Additionally, for the fourth time, he won 125cc U.S. Grand Prix of Motocross in 1976 and was runner-up to Bob Hannah in the 1976 125cc national championship. Then, he won the 500cc championship in 1977 before retiring from professional racing in 1981, and in 2000 he was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame.
But Marty was involved in the racing until 1991, he teamed up with Larry Roeseler and Ted Hunnicutt Jr. to win the famous Baja 1000 desert race on a Kawasaki.
