Kenneth Braithwaite aka Kenneth John Braithwaite II was born in 1960 and from Livonia, Michigan. He served as the United States Ambassador to Norway since February 8, 2018, and President Donald Trump said that he will nominate Kenneth Braithwaite, the U.S. ambassador to Norway, to become the next Navy secretary.
Earlier, Trump fired Richard Spencerover the president’s controversial decision in November to restore the rank of Eddie Gallagher, a former Navy SEAL charged with killing an ISIS prisoner in 2017.
The President announced his decision to nominate Braithwaite, a retired Navy rear admiral, shortly after Defense Secretary Mark Esper forced Spencer to resign for circumventing the chain of command by working on a “secret agreement with the White House” to reinstate Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher despite resistance from the Pentagon, CNN Reports.
Later, the President Tweeted that “Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer’s services have been terminated by Secretary of Defense Mark Esper. I thank Richard for his service & commitment. Eddie will retire peacefully with all of the honors that he has earned, including his Trident Pin,” and added “Admiral and now Ambassador to Norway Ken Braithwaite will be nominated by me to be the new Secretary of the Navy. A man of great achievement and success, I know Ken will do an outstanding job!.”
In 1984, he was commissioned as a U.S. Navy ensign and became a naval aviator in April 1986 and was assigned to fly anti-submarine patrol missions. Later, In April 1988 he was reassigned to public affairs duties.
During his active military career, he also served as a special assistant in the Office of Legislative Affairs, as director of public affairs aboard the aircraft carrier USS America (CV-66) and as chief of public affairs to the commander of Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.
A trained Naval aviator, Braithwaite flew missions tracking Soviet submarines throughout the Northern and Western Pacific Ocean regions, according to his online biography. Braithwaite later became a public affairs officer, serving in a variety of strategic communications and legislative affairs roles before leaving active service and entering the reserves in 1993.
Braithwaite also served as Commanding Officer of the Navy Combat Camera Command during the Iraq invasion in 2003. He served as Commander, Joint Public Affairs Support Element-Reserve (JPASE-R), part of Joint Enabling Capabilities Command from October of 2004 to October 2007.
Braithwaite’s active duty service ended in 1993 but he immediately joined the U.S. Navy Reserve. Furthermore, He continued to perform various public affairs assignments until his retirement in 2011. In 2007, he was nominated for the rank of rear admiral (lower half).
His final post before retiring from the reserves as a decorated rear admiral in 2011 was Vice Chief of Information for the Navy. Earlier, he also spent time in the private sector as an executive for American oil and health care companies. In the 2016 election, he became a member of Trump’s transition team and was nominated by the President as ambassador to Norway.
On November 24, 2019, following the firing of Richard V. Spencer, Trump said he would nominate Braithwaite to become the U.S. Secretary of the Navy, calling him a “man of great achievement and success.”
