Masons followers had committed a series of nine murders at four locations in 1969 and finally Charles was convicted of first degree murder and conspiracy to commit murders for the deaths of seven people in 1971. Mason was an unemployed ex-convict at the time the Manson family began to form.

The group recorded one of Manson’s songs, “Cease to Exist” in 1968, which was later retitled “Never Learn Not to Love”, as a single B-side, but without a credit to Manson.
After the cult leader was charged with the crimes of which he was later convicted, recordings of songs written and performed by Manson were released starring with “Lie: The Love and Terror Cult (1970).” Manson died at the age of 83 years in 2017 after serving his life sentence at California State Prison in Corcoran.
